The Surrender Process

With open hearts and non-judgmental ears we are here to help gently guide you through the surrender process.

We understand that life takes unexpected turns and sometimes that makes it necessary to consider alternative home options for your beloved Cavalier companion. We understand that the decision to surrender a dog is never an easy one. It may be one of the hardest choices you make in your life. But we are here with open hearts and non-judgmental ears to help you through this emotional journey.

We're here to offer you guidance, support and a comforting hand while you give up your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Our mission is to help make the process of finding your Cavalier as new home as seamless as possible. We will ensure that your Cavaliers's well-being and best interests remain at the heart of every step.

You’ve reached the decision to surrender your Cavalier, what is the next step?

The next step after you have reached the decision that it is in the best interest of your Cavalier to surrender them is contacting our Volunteer Rehoming Coordinator on 0458 550 878. They will discuss the process and the next step you need to take.

As part of the process we will ask you to complete a surrender form. It’s very important that you tell us everything there is to know about your dog. We need to be aware of all medical and/or behavioural issues so we can choose the most appropriate foster home.

Surrendering more than one dog? If you are surrendering more than one dog you will need to complete a surrender form for each dog. We will also organise the transfer of microchips to CKCSRQ.

What happens after a Cavalier has been surrendered?

Once a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is surrendered to us they undergo the following:

  • A full health assessment by one of our gentle Veterinarian.

  • The required Veterinary work is completed.

  • They are placed into foster care (the ideal foster carer is selected based on the information you have provided in the Surrender Form). In their safe, calm and loving foster care home they are able to heal from any veterinary work. They also have their temperament observed so that we can find them a forever home that matches their specific needs.

Rehoming Process

We undergo a rigorous process as part of rehoming a Cavalier. The process starts with learning as much as we can about each individual dog that comes into our care and this is where our wonderful Foster Carers help with the process. The dogs will usually stay with a Foster Carer for at least 2 to 3 weeks so we can get to know them and what type of environment would make the best new home. Some dogs are happier in a home with another dog while others may be better suited to be an only dog, some prefer children, some do not.

Once we feel the Cavalier is ready, we place their details up on our social media sites inviting expressions of interest for adoption and the adoption process begins.

Finding a new home for Cavaliers in our care is done via an application process. Once we feel the dog is ready to be rehomed we will post on our Facebook and Instagram pages inviting Expressions of Interest. We thoroughly review all Expression of Interests received and we will speak with potential adopters to find out more about them, their family and their lifestyle. We will also conduct a home inspection to make sure that everything is suitable for the new family member.

We do not keep a waiting list for adoptions and we don’t operate on a ‘first in, best dressed’ system. We take the time to find the best possible match between the dog and the new family. We are confident our process provides the best outcome for the dogs, who, of course, are our number one priority.
